I’m Sarah,
At the start of my career, I was lucky enough to be mentored by, and then work alongside, John Fisher – the original ‘dog whisperer’.
As a result of John’s experience, knowledge and support, I succeeded in building a career that had my heart and soul at its very centre. Nearly 30 years on, and I am still just as passionate about helping dogs, cats and their owners, using kind, force-free methods, and getting great results using the science and art of positive reinforcement.
I help others to fulfill their potential as trainers and behaviourists, through education, coaching, mentoring and occasional hand-holding, (because sometimes the very best trainers seem to lack confidence in themselves).
The reality is that to be a brilliant behaviourist, you need to be an exceptional dog trainer. And to be a superlative trainer, you need to understand behaviour inside and out.

As a canine behaviourist, "He`s only playing" is possibly my least favourite expression in the world…
Of course, many dogs love to play with other dogs, but with an estimated 64,000 dogs being killed or injured by other dogs in the UK in one-year*, it’s clearly not without risk.
Good canine play is balanced. Both dogs get to have fun and enjoy themselves without feeling threatened or bullied at any point. Play can change quickly from happy and relaxed to frightening or even damaging, so it is essential that we monitor our dogs’ play, and intervene where necessary.
It’s simply not true that dogs should be allowed to ‘sort it out themselves’. Even if neither of the dogs are physically harmed, the emotional effects of a bad experience can last forever and can create serious behavioural problems that could have been avoided.
Good play, on the other hand, can be fun, stimulating and enjoyable for both parties – it can also create and maintain bonds between dogs that remain friends for life.

We know that puppies have very small, but incredibly sharp teeth that quite honestly, a shark would be proud of! And they love to use them - to bite and mouth at toys, chews, and us!
It`s perfectly normal, but this often comes as a complete surprise to many new owners - who thought that they (and their kids) would be able to stroke, cuddle and kiss their pupster
It`s a shock to discover that they actually own a biting monster and that this sort of affectionate contact is effectively off the cards.
But why do puppies do this? And why some more than others? What makes it worse? And what makes it better? And... brace yourself... is it really a component to learning bite inhibition? Have we been barking up the wrong tree?
I was so curious about this whole subject that, with the help of an amazing colleague, I spent nearly two years researching the subject in-depth, and my findings are pretty remarkable and revealing. And if you want to geek out on it, I have a whole lecture online where I put forward my hypothesis, my research, and my results! I`d love you to watch that!
In summary though, and as a direct result of this work, I no longer believe it’s right to tell new owners to use the ‘ouch and ignore’ techniques of yesteryear.
Not only is this based on zero evidence, but it`s also reliant on using an aversive - which, quite frankly I simply don’t use in any other area of puppy training.
But, being completely honest, I realise that this has left a gap. What DO we tell people to do when their puppy is biting and mouthing, instead?
